EARPHONE TYPES
The most used and abused speakers that every one has owned at some point in their life. These are tiny speakers, with lesser power and impedance. They fit in right at the opening of the ear, as their radius is more or less the size of the opening. These are covered with padding of either cloth or rubber, yet they do not sound quality as good sound as the other headphones, though their ease of use and portability make them popular amongst those who enjoy music while eating, sleeping, jogging, etc.

In-ear or Canal phones
Canal phones are different since they fit right into the ear canal, with the help of their unique construction: a rubber sleeve protrusion is attached on the earpiece that acts as a ear plug, thus blocking out external noise. Another advantage is how comfortable they are. Since they fit into the ear directly it isn't required to attach them to any clip or headband of sorts.

The other special kinds are surround headphones, which emulate surround sound in your head with just regular stereo headphones, at least on the exterior and are popular with gamers.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Always pick a headphone that gives a good quality sound output. The size of every person's ear is different and you should get a pair that fits well to derive optimal quality.
  • If you are an everyday train traveler, do not opt for circum-aural headphones since they are heavy and might get stuffy. If you have an MP3 and other portable players then get a supra-aural pair. Else, headphones like the Sennheiser PXC-450 work best when teamed with an amplifier and bigger music players.
  • Circum-aural works best for studio professionals who need absolutely clear and taut sound. Gamers too could opt for these headphones as they offer great imaging and engulf the listener. Also, RJs and DJs need this kind too for mixing in tracks in their studios and noisy clubs respectively.
  • Earphones are obviously used for iPods, Zunes and all the other portable media players out there. Due to their portability they make good sense to take around while you’re on the move.
