Tips you need to choose and install a home theatre system
Suraj Anand | Oct 03, 2008

How much to pay for an HTS

Prashant got his home theatre system about one and half years ago. The Samsung R7 26-inch LCD TV cost him about Rs 42,000 and the entire Mitashi home theatre system came to Rs 15,000. The Tata Sky set top box cost him about Rs 4,500. Overall cost amounted to Rs 75,000. If you have an assembled home theatre system, your prices will vary depending on the choices you make for display and speakers. Ready-made or off-the-shelf home theatre systems come cheaper than assembled ones but limit you from buying a Denon or Bose set of speakers, for instance.

Tips for placement of HTS

Choose the display in accordance with the size of your room. If you want to wall mount your TV (almost always a preference in urban homes), the size of your LCD TV should fit the dimensions of your wall. Make sure there is sufficient viewing distance between the TV and the seating area. Prashant and Anu maintained a distance of seven-and-a-half feet.

Place the speakers at ear level for best decibel output.

These days you have the convenience to test your home theatre's sound output in most stores. Make sure you get a good demo before you opt for one. In case of assembled HTS, test the speakers; this way you know whether you want a Bose or a Denon.

Take help from the company professionals to install your LCD TV and the system. Most companies have customer support.

The right tips, an understanding of your space and the budget - you have it all here. So go on, head out and make your home theatre choice.

QUICK TIPS
  • Screen position

It's best to have the screen low and tilted back so that the center of the monitor is well below your eye level.

  • Protect your disks

Keep your CDs/DVDs at room temperature. Exposure to direct sunlight or temperature higher than 48 degree celsius can damage them.

  • Dish cleaning

No need to prerinse dishes before putting them on the dishwasher. It doesn't improve cleaning.
