TYPE OF SPEAKERS
This is the second most important part of the sound system. The whole output of the music is dependent on your choice of speakers. If the speakers are of bad quality then no matter how top-quality the other units of the system are; you will still end up listening to scratchy music.

If you are on a very tight budget then you can make do with two good speakers. Where you place these speakers will depend on your driving habits – if you travel in a chauffeur-driven car then placing the two speakers in the rear would we a wise thing to do. On the other hand, if you prefer driving the vehicle yourself then placing speakers in the front would make more sense. If you loosen your purse strings then a surround sound system is the perfect choice. Place two speakers in the front as well as rear, plus one centre speaker, to get the 5.1 channel effect.

Coaxial: Coaxial speakers are two-way or three-way speakers. They are relatively cheaper than standalone woofers and tweeters and are easy to install. The tweeters in co-axials deliver high frequencies whereas the woofers deliver low. They are usually fitted as rear speakers. Another advantage of coaxial is that they fit most vehicles.

Separates: These consist of a tweeter and woofer and usually come with an external crossover. The woofer is mounted in the kick panel (eg. door mounted) and the tweeters can be mounted in any corner of the corner you see fit.

Subwoofers:
These need to be mounted in special enclosures. Matching subwoofers and speakers to amplifiers is an important aspect of system planning, which is often overlooked. They are generally designed to handle the entire treble plus the bass down to around 100-200 Hz. Subwoofers add lower frequencies to the system. With the exception of the free air subwoofers, a lot depends on how well they are mounted and enclosed in a box. They need more power than the speakers because they are bigger and have to move more air. Go in for a Sony, Pioneer or a Kenwood amplifier for the front speakers and a better high current amplifier for the sub woofers. But if you seriously want the bass effect then you can also go in for brands like JBL, Soundstream and Kicker.

Mid-bases: These are usually of 5, 6 or 8 inches in height. Designed specially to go lower down in the frequency spectrum, they are a part of a three-way speaker system with a mid and tweeter.
