Of late, we have been receiving a lot of questions on multi-split conditioners, the latest being,

“Sir, I am looking for a 1.5 ton AC for my room. In case I go for a multi-split AC, what should be the tonnage? What about the choice of 1 and 2 compressor availability in multi-splits?

Before we go into the specifics of answering this question, let us first demystify multi-splits. As the name suggests, multi-splits are multiple split ACs connected to one unit. Simply put, these allow you to have two indoor units connected to one outdoor unit. You would go for this if you have a biggish house with multiple rooms and sweltering in your living room when you’re catching a late night match would be a thing of the past.

Multi-split systems are one of today’s most advanced forms of air conditioning. A multi-split option offers you the benefit of installing two indoor units with one outdoor unit. You can use both the indoor units individually or simultaneously. If you operate them individually, the entire capacity will be utilised in one room whereas if you use both the units, the capacity will be divided in both the rooms. In such systems, the condenser and fan of the outdoor unit may be controlled in accordance with the indoor units which transmit the control signals.

Multi-splits are available in capacities of 1, 1.5 and 2 tons. Recommended brands are LG and Hitachi.
