Cool summer shopping - Part I
Team CI | Jun 23, 2007
It could be a small one for the bedroom or a large one for the kitchen, shop for the hottest refrigerators to keep you cool this summer.

Come summer, everyone is out shopping for the right gear to beat the heat – sunscreens lotion, tissues, plenty of water and cold drinks, sunglasses, an umbrella perhaps, not to forget 'cool' outfits. We've covered all bases as far as facing the heat outdoors is concerned. So, how about shopping for the right appliance to beat the heat indoors as well. Don't sweat; we have plenty of choices here. Lets start with the refrigerators – the appliance that'll stock up all that precious cold water and ice cubes for you.

Refrigerators:
The refrigerator as we know it today has evolved – From the bulky, boxy single-capacity appliance with a heavily clustered wired back, it has become a light, smooth, clean back stylish appliance available in various sizes – from mini to large with a host of features that aren’t restricted to just cooling. With convergence being the name of the game, the refrigerator too has jumped onto the entertainment bandwagon and now comes with an LCD screen, electronic control panel and so on so that you might catch up with your favourite soap while cooking meals. To put it more precisely, you now have refrigerainment.

Mini refrigerators:
The heat can really sap you and make you lethargic. Besides, if your bedroom has the AC, then you really don’t want to leave the comfort of the room and get water from the kitchen, hence small refrigerators. These take little space and are ideal to keep in a small corner of the room. With a capacity of around 50-100 litres these refrigerators are usually for storing water, beer cans, drinks and fruits. These are also handy in studio apartments and bachelor pads where takeouts rule and only minimum food is stocked.

Some of the bedroom refrigerators available in the market are as follows:

Videocon 55X

This single door refrigerator from Videocon has a small freezer of 5 litres; a clean back and semi automatic defrost system. The 45-litre refrigerator section allows storage of drinks, water and fruits with 4 shelves and boxes to accommodate other food items. Large families could use this is as a bedroom refrigerator, whereas a bachelor or students will find this a more than sufficient storage for their food items. Price: Rs 4,800

Haier HR 60A:
Capacity: 60 litres
This compact single door refrigerator also has a small 5-litre freezer. Like the Videocon model, this too has a clean back and frost-free defrost system and has five shelves for storage. Price: Rs 6,000
