The iPhone's gathered a healthy amount of obsession for itself. Those who have seen it or read about it can't stop raving about how unique its touchscreen UI and most importantly its widgets (applications) are. Now, the touchscreen may be one-of-a kind, but the widgets aren't, at least not anymore. The latest buzz is that the much-hyped iPhone widgets can run equally well on Symbian smartphones, which means those of you having a N95, for instance can access the iPhone applications as well.
It's true that the widgets were written specifically for the iPhone, but according to Symbian's Bruce Carney, the Apple Safari browser and Nokia Series 60 browser share the same base code. Pretty hard to believe that Apple overlooked something so basic, but Carney actually demonstrated the claim by surfing through an iPhone site on his N95. Not only that, he also used one of the widgets to play a Sudoku game.
Apple may not be too happy to hear about this, but its very good news for mobile software developers who can now find a whole range of apps that they can port over the iPhone. Its even better news for a whole lot of consumers who haven't gotten hold of the prized phone from Apple yet. They can have half the iPhone experience through a Nokia series 60-browser phone. So, why wait? Take your N95 for some wicked widget fun!
